Hungary VS Portugal Prediction
“The Magical Magyars” look inspired enough to keep up the first position in Group F of UEFA Euro 2016 as they won the point in the closing minutes against Iceland. Now Bernd Storck’s men are keen to remain on top but they must stop Portugal’s enthusiasm, since it’s pretty obvious that Portugal are in very delicate situation as they’re on the edge of an epic downfall. Indeed, everything else than making it out of their Euro 2016 group won’t be accepted by the fans, by The Portuguese Football Federation, as well as by the players themselves.
Hungary at Euro 2016 – Team news and squad
Attila Fiola who missed the draw with Iceland is still the only doubt in Bernd Storck’s selection as the right-back should recover from the ankle injury he received during Hungary’s first European Championship victory since 1964 (2:0 vs Austria). Besides that, German coach of Hungary can’t see any particular reason for rotations, but we won’t be surprised if Ádám Szalai returns in the starting squad at the expense of Tamás Priskin, who was pretty inefficient against Iceland.
Ádám Szalai on his turn has scored the first goal for Hungary at Euro 2016 and it came as a result of good team work (one-twos) with László Kleinheisler. Last one is undoubtedly one of the most-well performing Hungarian players alongside left-back Tamas Kadar, veteran Zoltan Gera and captain Balázs Dzsudzsák.
All of them are set to take part in the upcoming clash which can be historical for Hungarian football and we expect Bernd Storck to revert within 4-1-4-1 formation he used against Austria.
Portugal at Euro 2016 – Team news and squad
With only two points won out of two games Portugal must quickly improve its attack and Fernando Santos knows that very well. Initially all Portuguese fans were expecting Cristiano Ronaldo to lead the team, but their biggest star fails to convince us that he’s the big figure there and penalty he missed against Austria may have ultimate consequences for “The Navigators”.
Portugal’s first choice left-back so far Raphael Guerreiro missed training together with central midfielder Andre Gomes, so this makes both of them doubtful before the crucial fixture against Hungary. However, Fernando Santos must prevent any possible surprises with adequate measures and expectations are that Guerreiro’s place can be covered by Eliseu, while Bayern Munich’s summer signing and youngster Renato Sanches can be in contention with João Mário, about who’ll cover eventual absence of Andre Gomes.
Main issue for Portugal remains the attack where they don’t have much options so possible rotations in defense are unlikely. However, we doubt that Fernando Santos will rest someone from Nani or Cristiano Ronaldo, at least not in game from such importance, so the main question remains about Selecção’s formation – 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-3.
Ricardo Quaresma failed to impress in all its efforts so far and we won’t be surprised if Fernando Santos starts with 4-3-3, with Rafa Silva alongside Nani and Ronaldo. This can add more pace in the team with fresh pair of legs and Rafa Silva looks more reliable than Eder at this moment. At least in our humble opinion.
Euro 2016: Hungary vs Portugal – betting prediction
Portugal must chase nothing else but the win out of this clash because everything else (draw) will be gambling. In case that Portugal wins a point and they respectively finish on third place in Group F, then they’ll be one of the third-placed teams with three points and however, this won’t be accepted by the Portuguese community. It’s not a secret that Portugal were drawn from Pot 1 and they are the big name in the group, so everything else than first position will be a surprise, especially when pre-tournament claims were that Portugal will easily cope with all teams in the group. Reality now looks a bit different and Portugal must defend their Round of 16 aspirations.
Hungary is in strong position and it’s pretty certain that they’ll be in the knockout phase, even if they remain on third position here. However, we are sure that their German duo in charge – Bernd Storck with his assistants Andreas Möller and Hungarian Zoltán Szélesi, are all ambitious for better positioning which should secure them better 1/8 final draw.
Portugal are yet to be defeated in 10 matches against Hungary and have won the last four. Even more, they have kept a clean sheet in the last three. Impressive record by Portugal and Fernando Santos’ men have to do their best to extend this streak. However, we find better value in current odds on Hungary and we’ll recommend bets for Hungary with Asian Handicap +1 on their side. In case that Hungary losses with only one goal margin your stake will be refunded. If we consider Portugal’s poor finishing, then we won’t be surprised if Hungary manage to steal something from their third Euro 2016 encounter.
