The first Derbi de la Comunitat in the 2017-18 La Liga season is set to take place on Saturday afternoon, 23 December, when both most successful clubs of the Valencian community will meet at the “Estadio de Mestalla”. Valancia have failed to win in any of the most recent three home matches against Villarreal, losing the last two of them, including a 1:3 defeat in May this year.
H2H History:Valencia and Villarreal have met 40 times in the different competitions and even in the former UEFA Cup. The overall head-to-head history is pretty balanced as Valencia have 16 against 15 wins of Villarreal, while the draws are 9.

La Liga: Valencia vs Villarreal 23.12.2017

Valencia are still undefeated at their “Mestalla” this season in all competitions, with Marcelino García Toral’s men looking to end 2017 with another home success. They have won six out of eight home La Liga encounters, conceding just four goals and scoring 19 in that period. That record is placing Valencia alongside Sevilla, both being joint runner-ups as the strongest home teams in La Liga.
However “Los Che” needs to wrap up the year in a positive manner after the two away losses to Getafe and Eibar earlier this month. They remain third in the La Liga standings and can even spend the short winter break on the second position, only if Atletico Madrid fails to get the three points from Espanyol on Friday night, and Marcelinho’s side wins the local derby.
Villarreal ended a three-match losing streak and four games without winning in La Liga with a narrow 1:0 victory over Celta in Vigo last weekend. However, most of these defeats came against strong enemies like Sevilla and Barcelona at home, while the away defeat to Leganes was a disappointment, although Leganes is a mid-table club, sitting on three points behind “The Yellow Submarine”.
Villarreal currently occupies the sixth position but Javier Calleja’s men are on five points behind the fifth-placed Sevilla, as well as on 10 points from their regional rivals from Valencia.

Team News and Missing Players

Valencia CF

Marcelino García Toral will challenge his former club with a clear purpose to close the year in the best possible way and to put an end of Valencia’s poor form when Villarreal arrives in town.
Portuguese winger Goncalo Guedes (3 goals, 5 assists) should be fit to start, after coming off the bench last weekend, but Jeison Murillo and Carlos Soler are both ruled out.
More good news are coming with fact that top scorer Simone Zaza returns from suspension and will lead Valencia’s 4-4-2 alongside Rodrigo Moreno. Central defender Ezequiel Garay is also set to return in the starting lineup and left-back Jose Gaya is a doubt with a minor muscle complaint.

Villarreal CF

It’s unlikely that Villarreal’s boss Javi Calleja considers many rotations after last weekend’s win, but one thing is sure – Cedric Bakambu, who served a suspension, will start. His attacking partner Carlos Bacca deals with a knock but is expected to start as well.
Andres Fernandez, Rúben Semedo, Daniele Bonera, Nicola Sansone are all injured and will miss out.
