Four days after The Lisbon Derby, Sporting CP returns at home turf for a clash against Maritimo when both clubs will play their round 17 encounter on Sunday evening, 7 January 2018. Hosts surely feel a bitter taste after a missed opportunity to beat Benfica at their own “da Luz”, but they should not succumb to any emotions if “Lions” really want to maintain their unbeaten streak.
Maritimo, on the other hand, lost second consecutive Primeira Liga game when Daniel Ramos’ men have suffered a 1-2 home loss to Chaves on Wednesday night.
Sporting CP and Maritimo have already met early in the campaign, at the same venue, when both sides have failed to score (0-0) in the League Cup group phase. Indeed, Sporting CP and Maritimo were together in Group B, alongside Belenenses and União Madeira, and “The Lions” from Lisbon managed to win the group due to the better goal difference they had, compared with runner-ups Maritimo. Nevertheless, only the group winner proceeds to the semi-finals, so Sporting have virtually knocked Maritimo out of the competition.

Primeira Liga: Sporting CP vs Maritimo 07.01.2018

Sporting remained undefeated in the Primeira Liga but Jorge Jesus’ men can feel somehow disappointed by Benfica’s late equalizer and the 1-1 draw in The Lisbon Derby. We must say that Benfica were the more consistent team in that game and considering a few controversial moments, Benfica didn’t deserved to lose the game at all, so Sporting might as well draw out some positives from the draw.
As a result of the Wednesday night’s draw, Sporting CP still occupies the second position in the Primeira Liga but now they are on two points behind rivals Porto. Both main pretenders remain unbeaten after 16 rounds but Porto are those having more wins – 13 against 12. Thus Sporting will be keen to win any of the following games, until Porto doesn’t fail to defeat some opponent. That’s a mandatory condition if Sporting wants to lift their first Primeira Liga trophy since more than 15 years.

Maritimo flies to Lisbon after a frustrating home loss to Chaves, which has dropped “The Green-and-Reds” to the sixth position. Now they have the same number of points with fifth-placed Rio Ave (before their visit to Braga on Saturday night) and remain on seven points behind fourth-placed Braga, as well as on four points over the seventh placed team – Vitória Guimarães. So they basically don’t have nothing to lose when visiting Sporting on Sunday night. In worst scenario they will keep the sixth position, although they have a chance to climb up to the fifth place if they earn something at the “Estádio José Alvalade”.

Team News and Missing Players

Sporting CP

The Argentine left-back Jonathan Silva remains an only injury concern for Jorge Jesus. However, Sporting’s boss can refresh the squad and pull Bruno Fernandes back as a central midfielder, while Daniel Podence can replace Rodrigo Battaglia in the starting XI so he can carry more offensive functions behind the target man Bas Dost. Otherwise no other rotations are anticipated and Sporting should start with the same 4-4-1-1 formation, that can quickly transform into a 4-2-3-1, with Marcos Acuña and Gelson Martins attacking through the wings.

Maritimo

Maritimo’s coach Daniel Ramos will surely be pleased on the same score as in the League Cup encounter but this time situation is pretty different and hosts should be more vigorous looking for the three points.
That’s why we believe Maritimo will start with a 4-5-1 formation and the Mozambican defender Zainadine Júnior should return at the centre-back. Fábio China recovers from a hand injury and remains doubtful, but Luis Martins looks ready to deputize at the left-back once more.
Despite China, Daniel Ramos can’t rely on the suspended attacking midfielder Jean Cleber, as well as on defenders Pablo Santos and Pedro Coronas, defensive midfielder Erdem Sen, and on Armenian winger Gevorg Ghazaryan, who are all injured.

Sporting CP vs Maritimo Prediction and Betting Tips

Marítimo unbeaten home record of 23 games came to an end in the midweek round. Now they play on the road where they have only won twice all season. Scoring away from home is not such a problem, however, it’s just winning they struggle with. Furthermore, Maritimo have scored in each of their last six away games in the Primeira Liga.
That’s why we fancy the currently suggested odds on “Both teams to score” and we believe Maritimo can be a tricky challenge for Sporting. They will surely feel more comfortable when defending and organizing counter-attacks, so our betting prediction recommends: “Both teams to score – Yes“.
