Bundesliga: Schalke 04 vs VfB Stuttgart 10.09.2017

Schalke 04 surprisingly appointed the 31-year-old German-Italian Domenico Tedesco who surely enjoys his first ever Bundesliga position. Tedesco made a name as he resurrected Erzgebirge Aue when they were last in the 2. Bundesliga, but after his appointment the club from Aue won 13 points out of five games, thus saving them from relegation. Now Domenico Tedesco finds himself in the Bundesliga reality and he’ll face the club where he spent some years as a youth coach – leading Stuttgart U17 in period 2013-2015, which actually was the beginning of his coaching career.
Tedesco began his Gelsenkirchen spell with an anticipated German Cup success (0:2) over BFC Dynamo in Berlin, followed by a very impressive victory over last year’s runner-up RB Leipzig – 2:0 at home turf. Unfortunately, Schalke failed to keep a clean sheet for a third consecutive game as they lost 1:0 in Hannover right prior break for national team football.
Against Schalke we have guests from Swabia who are back in the German elite after an enlightening one-year period in the 2. Bundesliga. Hannes Wolf leads VfB Stuttgart since almost an year (being appointed on 20 September 2016) and likewise Tedesco, that’s his biggest challenge ever. The 36-year-old German coach made a name in different youth formations of Schalke’s biggest rival – Borussia Dortmund, so he already has experience in the region, but not on such a level. Anyway, after a tricky DFB-Pokal visit to Cottbus (winning on penalties vs Energie) and losing in Berlin (2:0 to Hertha BSC) in Bundesliga’s opening round, “The Swabians” won their first home game – 1:0 vs Mainz 05. A win that definitely came on the right moment as the team entered in the international break without any additional pressure over, being one of the mid-table teams.

Match Preview: Team News, Squads and Missing Players

Former defender of Bayern Munich and Schalke, Holger Badstuber, was the one who scored the winning goal for Stuttgart last round but the talented German international is expected to miss out due to a muscle injury. A great player, no doubts, but all injuries through the years have stopped him becoming one of the best defenders worldwide. Now Badstuber is in one of his youth clubs and in case he’s not ready to play in Gelsenkirchen, Marcin Kaminski may replace him at the back.
Hannes Wolf also can’t rely on injured Emiliano Insua, Matthias Zimmermann, Anto Grgic and Carlos Mane. The Portuguese winger Mane, who’s on loan from Sporting CP, was one of the key players of Stuttgart on their way back and his long-term absence is a major loss.
Some of the misses open a starting position for summer signings like goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler, Andreas Beck, Chadrac Akolo and Orel Mangala, who competes for one of the central midfield roles with another new name – Santiago Ascacibar.
Schalke 04’s new boss had a good starting boost as the club invested some serious money on the transfer market. Thus “The Royal Blues” have signed with Nabil Bentaleb, Amine Harit and Yevhen Konoplyanka on a permanent basis, meaning that French attacking midfielder Harit is virtually the only new name, since Bentableb and Konoplyanka were previously on a loan-deal, and they are already accustomed to general atmosphere in Gelsenkirchen. That was obvious in the first two games where Konoplyanka and Bentaleb were Schalke’s goal scorers as Konoplyanka netted a brace in Berlin, followed by the second goal vs RB Leipzig, where Bentaleb opened the score with a successfully executed penalty.
Bastian Oczipka is another new name as the 28-year-old left-back already made a serious name through the years he spent in Eintracht Frankfurt.
Domenico Tedesco can be glad that midfielder Leon Goretzka is still in the club as his name has been linked with several possible transfers after a brilliant performance at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup with Die Mannschaft. Bad news, however, are related with name of captain Benedikt Höwedes who joined Italian Juventus on a one-year loan deal for €3.5 million. In the meantime French midfielder Benjamin Stambouli has served his two-game ban, he carried over from last season, and provides an additional midfield option. The Argentine striker Franco Di Santo is the only one who is doubtful in the hosts but his Austrian teammate Guido Burgstaller is ready to lead Schalke’s attack.

Schalke 04 vs VfB Stuttgart Prediction and Betting Tips

Losing to Hannover probably came on time to show some of the weak links in Schalke’s game plan. “The Royal Blues” are usually doing pretty well at home and as we stated in the introduction, they remain unbeaten in 11 home games. Last time when Schalke lost at home was in January (0:1 vs Eintracht) but thereafter they have five wins and six draws (all of them with the same score – 1:1). The 2:0 vs RB Leipzig on the start was a clear sign on Schalke’s intention to keep that good form and first of all they must achieve their first back-to-back home wins since November.
On the other hand we have Stuttgart who had a very poor away form in their last Bundesliga season. A lot of time has passed, indeed, but their defeat in Berlin and a different face shown vs Mainz at home are two reasons to believe that Stuttgart will be stronger at home, again.
Our betting prediction goes on the hosts – Schalke to win over Stuttgart. For greater odds on the home side we pick the Asian Handicap -0.5 on Schalke.
