Mainz 05 is set to take on a strained Borussia Dortmund in the midweek Bundesliga round, only two days after Peter Stöger has been appointed as the new man in charge of “The Black and Yellows”. Mainz 05 felt kind of a relieve when Danish striker Emil Berggreen scored a late equalizer in Leipzig on Saturday night, which surely inspires some optimism among the home squad. However, Borussia Dortmund head to Rhineland-Palatinate even more inspired to end its poor run of nine games without winning, losing six of them in the meantime.

Bundesliga: Mainz 05 vs Borussia Dortmund 12.12.2017

Peter Stöger will have a tough debut as his surprising appointment, we can say, came only one week since he was sacked from previous job at FC Cologne. The 51-years-old Austrian replaced Peter Bosz who led Borussia for less than five months, making him the first one who “survived” for such a short period after Jürgen Röber who resigned by his own decision after almost a three-month spell, declaring “he wasn’t able to reach the team”. Now the main question popping up is whether Stöger looks capable of reaching the team, especially for just two days after his arrival in Dortmund.
Moreover, the new Borussia Dortmund coach can’t rely on some first-team players and this pretty much reduces the overall squad depth, adding extra fatigue when “The Black and Yellows” have had a very busy schedule throughout the season. Erik Durm, Lukas Piszczek, Sebastian Rode, Gonzalo Castro, Mario Götze, Marco Reus and Maximilian Philipp are all absentees of “Die Borussen” so Stöger will most likely stick to a similar formation used by his predecessor in last weekend’s defeat to Werder Bremen.
Nuri Sahin and Julian Weigl are both expected to feature in central midfield, while Mahmoud Dahoud and Shinji Kagawa can sit on the bench.
Mainz have won just once in their last seven Bundesliga fixtures and therefore find themselves extremely close to the relegation zone. In fact, Mainz collects only two points more from Werder Bremen (17th) and Sandro Schwarz’s men have their own concerns. They did hold RB Leipzig to a resultative 2-2 draw at the weekend, though, which should return some confidence in the Mainz outfit.
Stefan Bell returns from a one-match ban, so Sandro Schwarz could stick within a back-three formation. The Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto should be ready to start from the outset and he can play alongside Robin Quaison, who scored the first goal in Leipzig.
Goalkeeper Rene Adler is still sidelined, as well as winger Karim Onisiwo, whilst Levin Öztunali and Yoshinori Muto are both doubtful.

Mainz 05 vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction and Betting Tips

Borussia Dortmund are undefeated in 15 out of 16 most recent matches against Mainz 05 in all competitions, but their current struggle makes the clash extremely suitable for certain claims by the home side. Indeed, Dortmund have conceded a goal in 15 of their last 16 games and have won three points only (three draws) in the last 8 Bundesliga rounds. Their latest Bundesliga victory remains in end of September when Dortmund won 2:1 in Augsburg, closing the perfect start of the campaign they had.
Despite all bad results of Dortmund and the obvious defensive weakness, we believe they have enough arguments to get back on track when facing an unconvincing Mainz 05. Our betting prediction goes on the away side – Borussia Dortmund to win in Mainz. Currently suggested 1X2 and Asian Handicap -0.5 betting odds are equal so the final decision is up to you.
