Bayern Munich vs Wolfsburg Prediction, Preview, Lineups, H2H & Betting Tips
Bayern Munich vs Wolfsburg betting prediction for Friday’s (22 September 207) Bundesliga encounter. After a surprising slip against Hoffenheim two weeks ago, Bavarians have successfully recovered and will be keen to continue their good form when Wolfsburg arrives in Munich. Read more in our detailed game preview, betting tips and predictions.
Head-to-head History: Bayern Munich vs Wolfsburg
Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg have met 48 times in different competitions throughout the years – 40 are in the Bundesliga, 6 Cup games (DFB-Pokal), 1 Super Cup and 1 for the T-Cup.
Bayern is absolutely dominant in the H2H record having won 37 times against only 4 in Wolfsburg’s favour. This leaves 7 draws as the last one was on 1 August 2015 when Wolfsburg won the German Super Cup trophy on penalties, after a 1:1 draw in regular time. Thereafter Bavarians are with six consecutive wins over “The Wolves”, who have showed their teeth and scored just twice in that period, while the overall goal difference is 22:2.
The most significant victory, part of that streak, was in end of April when Bayern won 0:6 in Wolfsburg, but what about a 5:1 win from exactly two years ago (22 September 2015) when Robert Lewandowski has scored five goals in space of 9 minutes?
Bundesliga: Bayern Munich vs Wolfsburg 22.09.2017
Martin Schmidt made his debut at Wolfsburg in the midweek Bundesliga round when Divock Origi has scored for the first time since his arrival, but Werder Bremen eventually won a point at the “Volkswagen Arena”. Wolfsburg may regret for a missed opportunity to win the game and they could surely perform better if Mario Gomez was on the field. In fact, there was an improvement in their performance compared to the last few rounds but generally it was obvious that Wolfsburg’s defense is far from being secure enough.
Now, after two draws at home and a narrow defeat in Stuttgart, Wolfsburg heads to Munich and such a test may come too soon for recently appointed Martin Schmidt.
Bavarians will kick-off game week 6 at home turf as Bayern occupies the second position, remaining on a point behind rivals Borussia Dortmund. So a win over Wolfsburg will move them on top of the Bundesliga at least for a while but most importantly, Bayern needs to get a decent result and maintain its good form before travelling to Paris for a Champions League commitment next week.
Match Preview: Team News, Squads and Missing Players
Carlo Ancelotti can take a deep breath after three convincing results against Anderlecht (3:0), Mainz 05 (4:0), and a 0:3 victory over Schalke in Gelsenkirchen last Tuesday. However, his chair can be shakened once again if Bayern underestimates Wolfsburg and fails to win, not to mention about an upcoming match vs PSG on Wednesday.
Ancelotti gave rest to some first-team players in the midweek and this may refresh the line on Friday. Jerome Boateng and Franck Ribery both remained on the bench the whole time, while Mats Hummels, Thiago Alcantara and Arturo Vidal were all used in closing quarter of the match. In the meantime James Rodriguez scored his first goal for Bayern and the Colombian can be an option for the right wing once more, especially if Arjen Robben is not ready to start. Kingsley Coman is also available to start as a right winger if his fellow compatriot Franck Ribery claims a starting position on the left flank here.
Apart from all doubts around Robben’s fitness, Carlo Ancelotti suffered a huge blow with Manuel Neuer’s injury, as the German national goalkeeper will be sidelined for a few months. This opens an opportunity for Sven Ulreich who is expected to carry all these huge expectations of Neuer’s absence.
Juan Bernat and David Alaba are both injured which makes Rafinha a certain favourite to start on the left-back.
Martin Schmidt is set for his first away game with Wolfsburg and it couldn’t been worse than a journey to the “Allianz Arena” in Munich. Expectations are that Wolfsburg’s boss will choose the same 4-2-3-1 formation used against Werder on Tuesday and changes are possible if Schmidt decides to rotate at the back. Youngster Ohis Felix Uduokhai, who is a first-team player in current campaign, can make way for the summer signing Marcel Tisserand since John Anthony Brooks and Jeffrey Bruma are still injured. Another injury comes with name of Mario Gomez whose absence leaves The Wolves without a typical central forward, so Divock Origi will most likely lead Wolfsburg’s attack.
Frenchman Josuha Guilavogui and Dutchman Riechedly Bazoer are two central midfield options in case that Schmidt decides to replace someone from anticipated starting duo Ignacio Camacho-Max Arnold.
Polish winger Jakub Blaszczykowski should return in contention, although it might be too early for him to start, but Martin Schmidt can have him on the bench. Thus Yunus Malli, Daniel Didavi and Paul-Georges Ntep can form the trio behind Origi.
Bayern Munich vs Wolfsburg Prediction and Betting Tips
As we mentioned Carlo Ancelotti made some rotations in the midweek and we expect Bayern’s best possible starting XI on the field this Friday. We won’t be surprised if Ancelotti plays the same formation he plans to use in Paris only couple of days later and the Bundesliga round can be general warm-up of a much trickier challenge.
On the other hand Wolfsburg looks really shaky in defense and Bayern knows how to use these spaces. James Rodriguez starts finding his shape but he will need more time to adapt, so these type of games are a must for the Colombian, who can form a decent partnership alongside Kignsley Coman/Franck Ribery, Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski (expected attacking formation of Bayern this round).
Bavarians are very effective against Wolfsburg and considering their current momentum (scoring at least three goals in the last three games) we expect another convincing victory (with 3 or more goals) for Bayern Munich. They will be eager to get a proper confidence boost (result) before the mega clash against PSG.
Our betting prediction goes to the Asian Handicap market where we pick -2 on the hosts, meaning that you will have your stake refunded if Bayern wins with a two goal margin.
