Nantes vs Marseille Prediction, Preview, Lineups, H2H and Betting Tips
It’s time for Claudio Rainieri’s home debut as the experienced Italian will have to resurrect his side after losing 3:0 to Lille in Ligue 1’s opening round. Claudio Ranieri will face another former manager of AS Roma in Rudi García’s face, who has long-term Ligue 1 experience and has been appointed to make Marseille’s formation more competitive to the other leading sides. The clash facing Ranieri vs Garcia and Nantes vs Olympique Marseille is set to open Saturday’s Ligue 1 schedule when both sides will meet at the “Stade de la Beaujoire – Louis Fonteneau” in Nantes, western France.
H2H: Nantes vs Olympique Marseille
Nantes and Marseille have exchanged a home win last season when “Les Olympiens” won 2:1 in September, whilst Nantes won 3:2 in February. Bafetimbi Gomis was the one who scored three out of four goals for Marseille in these head-to-head ties but he joined Turkish Galatasaray earlier this summer.
Head-to-head Stats for the past 20 years: 32 matches, Nantes – 10 wins, 9 draws, 13 wins for Olympique Marseille.
H2H Balance in Nantes: 8 wins for Nantes, 5 draws, 3 wins for Olympique Marseille.
Ligue 1: Nantes vs Marseille 12.08.2017
The most surprising English Premier League winner Claudio Ranieri couldn’t be particularly inspired by his return into French football. Indeed, Nantes will hardly repeat Leicester City’s amazing form but who knows… Anyway, “Les Canaris” lost 3:0 to Lille which has been preceded by few more goalless efforts in the pre-season friendlies. Before the false start vs one of Rudi Garcia’s former clubs, Nantes suffered defeats to FC Ingolstadt (0:2), Genoa (0:1) and drew against Hull City (0:0). This pretty much shows that Ranieri may have difficult days in Nantes and as long as we know him, well, we’re pretty sure the Italian will focus on the defensive work.
On the other hand we have Marseille who are eager to return the old glory days. At first time Marseille will be more than delighted if the once glorious club returns in the UEFA Champions League which goes through a period of consistency and mandatory victories over teams like Nantes, which don’t have any certain expectations and top-half positioning would be great at the end.
Like we mentioned Rudi García has solid experience in French football and he already lifted that trophy with Lille in season 2010-11. Couple of years later such a task looks extremely difficult when you must compete with current PSG roster. That’s why it’s more realistic if Marseille aims to a top 3 positioning, but this doesn’t mean they won’t do their best to cause maximum damage to PSG and reigning champions Monaco.
Match Preview: Team News, Squads and Missing Players
After a poor defensive display in Lille, Ranieri will probably require more from the summer signing Nicolas Pallois (arrived from Bordeaux) who must form a centre-back duo with Diego Carlos. Brazilian left-back Lucas Lima is expected to start at the expense of Koffi Djidji, while Guillaume Gillet remains questionable as he has been linked with a potential move to Greek champion Olympiakos.
Another potential rotation in Nantes is on the left flank where Jules Iloki may step aside for Adrien Thomasson.
Rudi García may be pleased with the fine selection he has and options to rotate players. Most of you probably know that Marseille is engaged in the UEFA Europa League qualifying where on Thursday “Les Olympiens” will face Slovenian Domzale (away from home). Nevertheless, we believe Rudi García will use his best men to chase second consecutive Ligue 1 success after a 3:0 vs Dijon last weekend.
Dimitri Payet is an only doubt for Marseille, after coming off injured in the first round. Clinton N’Jie was his replacement and he scored twice against Dijon, so we won’t be surprised if N’Jie starts on the left flank once more. Rémy Cabella and Lucas Ocampos are other options, whilst Valère Germain, Florian Thauvin, and summer signing Luiz Gustavo are other favourites to start. Gustavo did well so he will surely become one of the key players in Marseille’s midfield, alongside Morgan Sanson and Maxime Lopez.
In the meantime Marseille’s defensive line also looks solid and filled by experienced names. Besides goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, Rudi García can pick a defensive quartet with names like Patrice Evra, Adil Rami, Rolando, Hiroki Sakai.
Nantes vs Marseille Prediction and Betting Tips
It is obvious that Marseille have difficult journeys to Nantes from the stats we can check, but however, situation is completely different nowadays. We do believe that Marseille have what it takes to claim the whole set of points and our betting prediction goes on the away side. Marseille to win in Nantes – 1X2 Betting. Ranieri will need time to settle in a brand new atmosphere and we expect Olympique Marseille to take advantage of that.
