UEFA Europa League: Konyaspor vs RB Salzburg 19.10.2017

“The Red Bulls” from Salzburg are undefeated in eleven European matches, including seven in the Europa League and four more in this season’s Champions League qualifiers. Unfortunately RB Salzburg suffered another disappointment on its way to the Champions League groups and seeks consolation in the UEFA Europa League, losing to Croatian champion Rijeka on aggregate (0:0, 1:1). Austrian champions had to deserve their position in the playoffs where they were extremely convincing and won twice over Romanian champion Viitorul – 3:1 and 4:0.
RB Salzburg was drawn in a pretty competitive Group I, where Austrian club is alongside Vitória Guimarães, Olympique Marseille and current opposition – Konyaspor. So far so good, Marco Rose’s men are first with four points won out of first two rounds after a draw (1:1) vs Vitória in Guimarães, followed by a narrow home success over OM last round.
Around a plenitude of continental action, RB Salzburg is highly competitive in Austrian Bundesliga for another year. “The Red Bulls” are second after 11 games, being on a point behind leaders Sturm Graz.
Konyaspor can’t boast with the same domestic performance of its opponent but “The Anatolian Eagle” had its own achievements in the past two years. First of all Konyaspor finished third in the 2015–16 Süper Lig and won direct promotion for the Europa League group stage, which marked their debut in European football. Well, Konyaspor won only one point in a group with Shakhtar Donetsk, Braga, and Gent, but gained experience which is obviously helpful in the new season.
The club from Konya has won the 2016/17 Turkish Cup and later on the Super Cup, which were the first ever major trophies in Konyaspor’s showcase. Thus “The Anatolian Eagle” won another opportunity to start directly in the Europa League group stage and already secured their first European win – 2:1 vs Vitória just three weeks ago. This levels Konyaspor next to Olympique Marseille, who won their home match vs the Turkish team (1:0 in the opening round), but then lost to Salzburg.
In the meantime Mustafa Reşit Akçay, who has been appointed in Konyaspor earlier this summer, needs to work on the domestic efforts since the team finds itself 15th in the Süper Lig, having the same number of points (7) as Genclerbirligi, who are in the relegation zone (16th).

Match Preview: Team News, Squads and Missing Players

Konyaspor are set for a second successive home game in space of five days, after losing 0:2 to Galatasaray on Saturday evening. Nonetheless, Mustafa Reşit Akçay will probably stick to the same 4-2-3-1 formation and lineup as he can’t still rely on injured left-back Amir Hadziahmetovic and striker Abdou Razak Traore, who is ruled out for a long time.
Previously youth-team boss, Marco Rose stepped up to the Salzburg helm after predecessor Oscar García left in June. He doesn’t possess the coaching practice of his Turkish colleague but he surely is determined to prove himself and knows the atmosphere in Salzburg quite well, since he joined the Austrian club back in 2013, as a coach of the U16 formation.
Marco Rose picked a group of 20 men for Konya. Stefan Stangl and Marin Pongracic are not on board as they both need to gain match fitness after long-term injuries, while Hee-Chan Hwang and Patson Daka are still injured.

Konyaspor vs RB Salzburg Prediction and Betting Tips

RB Salzburg have won three of their last six European visits and have drawn in the other three. This somehow, in addition to their overall form, makes them favourites before the game in Turkey but we should also mention they have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last six away games at all. A streak that includes four wins (vs Viitorul, Mattersburg, Bruck/Leitha, LASK Linz), a draw (1:1 vs Vitória Guimarães), and a loss (1:0) to Sturm Graz.
Konyaspor may struggle in the Süper Lig but we all know that Turkish teams are usually extremely motivated on the international scene and we shall expect a different morale by the home side, despite their weekend defeat from the league leaders Galatasaray.
We believe that Konyaspor won’t lose vs RB Salzburg and we find a decent value to place a bet on the home side – Asian Handicap +0.5 (Double Chance 1X).
