H2H History: Crvena Zvezda vs BATE Borisov
This will be the first ever clash between these two sides. However, BATE Borisov already eliminated Crvena Zvezda’s eternal rival, Partizan Belgrade, in the 2015–16 UEFA Champions League playoffs – winning 1:0 at home and losing 2:1 in Serbia.
Crvena Zvezda also have past experience with a Belarusian opposition when they met Naftan Novopolotsk in round 2 of the 2012-13 UEFA Europa League qualifiers. The Red-Whites were final winners after a two-legged goal thriller – 3:3 in Belgrade, followed by a 4:3 win in Belarus. Thus Crvena Zvezda qualified to the next round winning 7:6 on aggregate.
UEFA Europa League: Crvena Zvezda vs BATE Borisov 14.09.2017
BATE have won two of their three European away games this season, but are without a win in eight UEFA group phase away games (only one draw in them) ever since a surprising 1:3 success vs Lille in their 2012/13 UEFA Champions League opener.
This year squad led by Alyaksandr Yermakovich began in the Champions League qualifiers where they have eliminated Armenian Alashkert (1:1 at home, 1:3 in Armenia), but lost to Slavia Prague in the next round (losing 1:0 in Prague and winning 2:1 in Borisov).
This won them a position in the Europa League playoffs where BATE met Ukrainian Oleksandriya and won 3:2 on aggregate (1:1 in Belarus, 1:2 in Ukraine). In the meantime BATE’s domestic superiority has been put on serious threat as Alyaksandr Yermakovich’s men are currently on four points behind leaders Dinamo Minsk, and on two from runner-up Shakhtyor Soligorsk.
Crvena Zvezda are one of three teams to have made it all the way from the first qualifying round to the group stage this season. A great march by Vladan Milojevic’s men who have won all their European home games so far and eliminated teams of Floriana (Malta), Irtysh Pavlodar (Kazakhstan), Sparta Prague (Czech Republic), and FC Krasnodar (Russia). Unquestionably the victories over Sparta Prague and FC Krasnodar are the most impressive results in Crvena Zvezda’s Europa League campaign, which is also club’s first group phase entry since the 2007-08 UEFA Cup season when Zvezda lost all games vs sides like Bayern Munich, Aris, Bolton Wanderers, and Braga.
Crvena Zvezda are doing quite well in the domestic league where they share the same number of points alongside Partizan on top of the table, but have played two games less. In fact their only defeat this season came in Krasnodar, where Crvena Zvezda lost 3:2, but won the second leg in Belgrade with 2:1.
