Round 5 of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League group stage promises lot of action as always and we can be pleased its schedule begins earlier, since we have game in Russia, where FK Rostov will take on one of the usual suspects for winning the trophy – Bayern Munich. First encounter between both sides was on matchday one, 13 September 2016, when Bayern Munich wrecked Rostov with 5-0 in their Champions League debut, so Russian vice-champions will be keen to avoid similar scenario when they’re playing at home, amid Russian winter.

FK Rostov vs Bayern Munich – Team News and Match Preview

“The Selmashi” already slipped PSV Eindhoven in their first home match and that 2-2 draw from end of September remains the only source of points both teams have. Of a point if we should be accurate. Anyway, Rostov were very tricky opposition for group leaders Atletico Madrid in following two rounds and after losing 0-1 at home, Ivan Daniliants’ men were not far from winning a point at the “Estadio Vicente Calderón” in Spanish capital. Score was still 1-1 until the 93rd minute, when Antoine Griezmann has netted its second goal in that game and thus he brought whole set of points for Atleti.
Rostov’s domestic form remains pretty inconsistent and they have been brilliant at home, but woeful in their away games. Just as an example we’d like to note that 19 from their 21 points have been won at home, which means they still remain without victory on the road. Meanwhile their only away success came in opening days of the season, when Rostov won against Anderlecht in Belgium and that victory obviously inspired “The Selmashi” for their further achievement. It has been followed by a memorable playoff duel against Ajax Amsterdam and after a draw in Dutch capital, Rostov were brilliant in second decisive leg they have won it 4-1, which qualified them into the UEFA Champions League groups for the very first time.
Bavarians were surely expecting better prospects before journey to Russia, but after losing from Atletico Madrid in end of September, Bayern is with the role of runner-up. Their current mood won’t be finest as well, since Bayern lost the derby against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday evening and that was their first Bundesliga defeat since early March, when Bayer lost to Mainz 05. After that defeat Bayern Munich remains second in the standings where we surprisingly find newly promoted RB Leipzig on top, while Borussia Dortmund, Köln, Hoffenheim, Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt are all on three points from Bayern. Undoubtedly, Bayern’s defeat in Dortmund returns intrigue on the domestic scene but that surely wasn’t a purpose of Carlo Ancelotti and Italian manager must justify the credit he still has.

FK Rostov vs Bayern Munich – Betting Prediction and Possible Lineups

That point won from PSV and strong resistance shown against Atletico Madrid are few good arguments for Carlo Ancelotti, who need to consider carefully its approach on that game. Bayern Munich arrives in Russia as the big favourite and everything else than victory of the German side will be huge surprise for the worldwide football community, which doesn’t mean Rostov is ready to give up that easily.
Rostov looks really solid at its own fortress and fact their only home defeat in last 18 months was against Atletico Madrid speaks for itself. Of course, we cannot compare any domestic games in that period with a Champions League fixture against Bayern, who are in desperate need of victory in order to remain close behind Atletico, if they want to claim first position in the group. This can happen when in the last round both Group D favourites will meet in a direct scuffle, but Bayern Munich must not slip in Russia first of all. Moreover, their defeat from Dortmund was preceded by a home draw vs Hoffenheim (1-1), which is another reason why Carlo Ancelotti can’t afford another disappointing performance in such short period, not when Bayern should return on track before upcoming weekend clash against Bayer Leverkusen.
Rostov returns at home after a goalless draw in its visit to Kazan (vs Rubin) on Friday evening, which has been only the second point won away from home in the 2016-17 Russian Premier League. In these circumstances we can easily take it as positive and Rostov’s confidence can be even higher, especially when Ivan Daniliants has full squad available. Presence of Fedor Kudryashov at the left-back, who missed first game in Munich, should add more stability in Rostov’s regular 5-3-2 formation, but we should highlight another important detail regarding their defense. Last time when both sides met Rostov was with a brand new defensive formation after some late activity (on both ways) on summer transfer window, while this time their centre-back trio Granat-Mevlja-Navas has much more experience of playing together.
On other side we have strikers like Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller who are not so impressed by most defenses in European football. We believe they have proved it in the years and Carlo Ancelotti relies his top strikers will awake after their goalless performance last weekend. Possible rotation is available on the left flank of Bayern’s attack, where we expect more first-team football for Douglas Costa.
Update: Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been ruled out with a tight calf and he will not be included for Bayern Munich’s group to Russia, which means Sven Ulreich should replace him between the sticks.
Another change which seems to very likely to happen is related with name of Xavi Alonso, who’ll hit 35 only two days later, as we expect Ancelotti will refresh his midfield line and Renato Sanches can be a wonderful option for that game.
Javi Martínez, Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman are all out because of injuries, but Arturo Vidal remains a doubt due to a muscular problem. He missed game against Dortmund and we’re not sure will he start in Russia. Bayern has enough squad depth so Ancelotti can avoid any risks if Vidal is not fully fit, so he can keep him for the forthcoming Bundesliga round.

Final conclusion and Betting Prediction

Everything else from deep defending by Rostov and deep press from Bayern will surprise us, but who knows. Russian cold can be additional boost for players to run even more than usual and we find great value in currently suggested odds for “Over 3 Goals”. Rostov will defend but one goal by Bayern can easily change the game plan and possible approaches of both sides.
Bayern Munich will be eager to score after two frugal and ineffective efforts, before and after break for international football. Another good point to recommend betting for “Over 3 Goals” in the Champions League encounter between Rostov and Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, 23.11.2016.

Venue: “Olimp 2”, Rostov-na-Donu.

Referee: Artur Dias from Portugal.
