Borussia Dortmund vs Monaco Prediction, Preview, H2H, Lineups & Betting Tips
The 2016-17 UEFA Champions League returns with its quarter-final stage as on Tuesday night, 11 April 2017, Borussia Dortmund and AS Monaco will be keen to determine a first-leg advantage. The “Signal Iduna Park” in Dortmund hosts the first encounter where “Die Borussen” must do their best to pick up a lead before second leg in the Principality of Monaco, which will take place only one week later on 19 April.
Important news: First leg of the 2016-17 Champions League quarter-finals between Borussia Dortmund and AS Monaco has been postponed for Wednesday night, 12.04.2017, at 18:45 CET (local time)!!!
H2H History: Borussia Dortmund vs AS Monaco
Both sides will meet for the very first time and they perfectly realize the importance of a Champions League quarter-final matchup. Borussia Dortmund and AS Monaco already have experience playing on this advanced stage as the last time when Dortmund were one of the last eight was three years ago – losing to Real Madrid (0-3, 2-0).
AS Monaco reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals only two years ago when Les Monégasques were eliminated by Juventus (0-0, 0-1).
Even if they have not met so far, Borussia Dortmund and Monaco are both having history when facing a club from the opposite country.
H2H: Borussia Dortmund vs French clubs
Dortmund’s home record vs French clubs consists of four wins, three draws and a lone defeat. Their last result was a 3-0 victory over Olympique de Marseille in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stage. However, the German club won only two times in last six home games to French sides and an aforementioned success against Marseille is their only victory in last four occasions.
H2H: AS Monaco vs German clubs
Monaco already visited Germany earlier in this season’s group stage – they lost 3-0 to Bayer in Leverkusen. Anyway, it took place on matchday six and Leonardo Jardim’s men were already certain for the first Group E position and basically the game was meaningless. Previous meeting in the Principality of Monaco ended without a winner when both sides have shared a point, however, a draw was influenced by a real screamer from Kamil Glik in stoppage time.
Generally, Monaco’s record away to Germany is not bad at all. They hold three wins, two draws and two defeats, being unbeaten for five games prior losing to Leverkusen in December.
UEFA Champions League: Borussia Dortmund vs Monaco 11.04.2017
Borussia Dortmund comes back home after suffering a heavy defeat to Bayern Munich last weekend. Thomas Tuchel’s side lost 4-1 at the “Allianz Arena” and remains on 18 points behind Bundesliga leaders from Bavaria, while the gap between Dortmund and second-placed RB Leipzig increased to 8 points. Anyhow, Borussia Dortmund still have a strong lead above Hertha BSC (5th) and they can mostly focus upon both cup competitions – the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal.
Monaco heads to North Rhine-Westphalia in a good mood since “Les Monégasques” found a way to bounce back after a disappointing Coupe de la Ligue final loss to PSG (1-4) 10 days ago. It has been followed by two consecutive wins which were helpful for Monaco’s progress on both domestic fronts. First of all Monaco qualified to the French Cup semi-finals (where they will once more face PSG by the way) after a 2-1 home win over Lille last Tuesday and on Saturday evening they won 0-1 in Angers. Thus Monaco maintains a three-point lead to PSG in the French Ligue 1.
Match Preview: Team News, Squads and Missing Players
Borussia looks rock-solid at home as “The Black and Yellows” haven’t lost a single match in Dortmund since mid-August, when they lost the German Super Cup clash from Bayern. After following number of unbeaten home games (19) we also find a draw and three victories in Dortmund’s Champions League encounters so far. Everything began with a 2-2 draw vs Real Madrid, followed by three successive wins over Legia Warsaw (8-4), Sporting CP (1-0) and Benfica (4-0).
Now Thomas Tuchel hopes to have some of the players who were not available against Bayern on Saturday back in the squad. Julian Weigl is surely one of them as latest rumours suggest that young defensive midfielder should be ready to play. Experienced right-back Lukasz Piszczek should be reintroduced in the formation as we expect general rotations in Dortmund’s formation here – Tuchel can start with a 4-1-4-1, instead of the 3-4-2-1 used in Munich.
Meanwhile Thomas Tuchel should pick rest of the squad without injured trio Erik Durm, Gonzalo Castro and Mario Götze, while Andre Schurrle is a doubt.
Latest news 10.04.2017: Lukasz Piszczek, Julian Weigl, Shinji Kagawa and Marco Reus all took part on Monday’s training session, but Gonzalo Castro misses out.
Monaco’s boss Leonardo Jardim is glad to welcome key defender Kamil Glik back in the squad as he missed second leg vs Man City through suspension. Unfortunately Jardim had to choose a 20-man group without names of some key players like defender Djibril Sidibe and defensive midfielder Tiemoué Bakayoko. Latter is suspended and he joins list of unavailable players alongside injured Sidibe, Gabriel Boschilia, Guido Carrillo.
Almamy Toure and Andrea Raggi are competing to replace Sidibe on the right-back, whilst experienced Portuguese midfielder João Moutinho seems to be an adequate replacement of Bakayoko in heart of Monaco’s midfield.
Borussia Dortmund vs AS Monaco Betting Prediction
Unquestionably, Monaco achieved some great results in the 2016-17 Champions League. Besides winning its group, “Les Monégasques” eliminated an ambitious team like Manchester City in the Round of 16. Such a result definitely boosts team’s confidence and with all excellent youngsters in the group Leonardo Jardim relies on high pace, as well as on a lethal finishing by Falcao and Kylian Mbappe.
We have two teams which do not hesitate when they have to score, although risk is too big and we won’t be surprised if one of the coaches selects one idea more cautious approach for that game.
Thomas Tuchel’s side looks much better at home and Borussia Dortmund prepares for a tricky challenge in the second-leg, no matter what happens at German turf. That’s why our prediction goes on the home side and we believe Dortmund have what it takes to defeat Monaco on Tuesday night – 1X2 Betting on “Die Borussen”.
Venue: “Signal Iduna Park”, Dortmund.
