Head-to-head History: Barcelona vs Juventus
Juventus pledged to a defensive masterclass last season as they knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League quarter-finals thanks to a very impressive 3-0 win in Turin, followed by a goalless draw in Barcelona only one week later. That was their answer for the 2015 Champions League Final defeat, although The Bianconeri eventually lost the 2017 final to Barca’s biggest enemy – Real Madrid. A lot has changed since that clash though as we have some new faces on both sides.
The overall balance in previous meetings between Barcelona and Juventus is equal. Both sides have each won three, lost three, and drawn three times, in their nine previous competitive encounters. Most memorable tie among all is definitely the aforementioned 2015 Champions League Final, as well as the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals (won by Barcelona – 3:2 on aggregate).
UEFA Champions League: Barcelona vs Juventus 12.09.2017
Barca won over Juve in a friendly match (International Champions Cup) less than two months ago at the “MetLife Stadium” in New Jersey, where Neymar scored a brace and Giorgio Chiellini came with the answer for Juventus. Of course, we can’t compare any of these pre-season tournaments with the real battles as we have one of them approaching. Barcelona and Juventus have been drawn alongside Sporting CP and Olympiacos Piraeus in Group D of the 2017-18 Champions League group stage, making them two certain favourites for further progress. A possible success here will give an advantage to the winning side and moreover, it will reduce the pressure of a possible group stage failure, which sounds very unlikely but both sides can’t underestimate the Champions League prospects that easily.
Juventus travelled to Barcelona after a third consecutive Serie A victory on Saturday, beating Chievo 3:0 at home. Thus Massimiliano Allegri’s side is topping the Calcio due to the better goal difference they have compared with Napoli and Inter (+8 vs +7) and looks determined again after losing to Lazio in the Italian Super Cup match.
Paulo Dybala hints to be in-shape as he scored seven goals in all four official games so far.
Barcelona find themselves in a pretty similar situation like their Italian opposition after losing the Spanish Super Cup to rivals Real Madrid. However, after a two-legged tie and two disappointing defeats vs The Meringues, Barca began the new La Liga campaign with three successive victories, keeping a clean sheet in any of them. The most impressive win of all came on Saturday night when Ernesto Valverde’s men won 5:0 over regional rivals Espanyol and remain on top of the standings (due to better goal difference to runner-up Real Sociedad). Dybala’s compatriot Leo Messi has scored a hat-trick in the last round and already has five goals on his personal account after three La Liga rounds.
Match Preview: Team News, Squads and Missing Players
Juventus may experience some serious difficulties when they return at the Camp Nou couple of months after their previous journey. One of the key reasons has been the shock sale of Leonardo Bonucci, who joined rivals AC Milan, and with veteran Giorgio Chiellini out injured they could be pretty vulnerable to Barcelona’s attack this time. German World Cup winner Benedikt Höwedes has been loaned from Schalke 04 but he still waits to make a debut for The Bianconeri and even he’s ready to play now, he will surely need some time to adapt in an absolutely different atmosphere. So most likely Höwedes will sit on the bench while other Italian veteran from former golden trio of Juventus, Andrea Barzagli, is set to start next to either Daniele Rugani or Medhi Benatia.
In addition to Bonucci’s departure and Chiellini’s injury, Max Allegri has some other concerns – experienced right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner was once again dropped out of the Champions League squad list, Juan Cuadrado serves a one-game suspension for his red card vs Real Madrid, while Claudio Marchisio, Marko Pjaca, and Sami Khedira are all injured.
All misses will open space for the summer signings who are eager to make their Champions League debut with the Juventus jersey. Mattia De Sciglio should start as a right-back, Blaise Matuidi as a central midfield partner of Miralem Pjanic.
Matchday Update 12.09.2017: Mario Mandzukic is also ruled out of Juve’s Champions League opening game so Max Allegri is expected to start with Federico Bernardeschi and Douglas Costa on both wings.
On the other hand Ernesto Valverde has all key players in contention and the Blaugrana will start with optimal XI. Some rotations can be done in the upcoming La Liga round vs Getafe, but Valverde will name all best men vs the Turin outfit.
Sergi Roberto, Rafinha and Arda Turan are expected to miss out for Barca, but this won’t be an such an issue, because even if Roberto is not ready, summer signing Nelson Semedo can feature on the right-back. Otherwise Roberto may start in a defensive quartet with Pique, Umtiti and Jordi Alba.
Situation in midfield looks quite predictable and we would be surprised if someone from the trio Busquets/Iniesta/Rakitic is benched. Same goes for both South American forwards Leo Messi and Luis Suarez who will lead Barca’s attack but th main question is related who will replace Neymar here – will Gerard Deulofeu start again or Ousmane Dembele is ready to make his debut in the starting lineup. The 20-year-old French talent made his first appearance against Espanyol replacing exactly Deulofeu in the second half, as Dembele had his own impact on the game – assisting for the fifth goal scored by Luis Suarez.
Barcelona vs Juventus Prediction and Betting Tips
Barcelona and Juventus are heading to their Champions League opener after three domestic wins and this will be kind of a boost for both. Ernesto Valverde is on the eve of his first big test (apart from both Super Cup games) while Max Allegri already had some time to build his own Juventus style after Antonio Conte’s Renaissance.
A hard to predict tie although bookies give clear advantage to the home side. We will stay aside from the 1X2 betting and our betting prediction goes on the scoring markets – “Both teams to score – Yes“. Like we highlighted Barcelona and Juventus have their Argentine star men and their current attacking lines look much stronger than their defensive formations. Another good reason why “Both teams to score” is a reasonable betting selection ahead of the show.
