Brondby vs FC Copenhagen Prediction, Preview, Lineups & Betting Tips
One of the few European derbies that are scheduled for the upcoming Sunday, 15 April 2018, is set to take place at the “Brøndby Stadion” in Brøndby, where hosts Brondby IF will be keen to achieve fourth consecutive victory over local rivals FC Copenhagen. That’s the biggest game in Danish football known as “The New Firm” as it meets the two most successful teams in the Superliga – FCK have won the trophy twelve times, while Brondby just six times but in the Superliga era – since 1992. However, Brondby have won the Danish Football Championship 10 times in overall, but the last one of them was over a decade ago – in the 2004/05 season. Now they have a golden opportunity to claim the Superliga trophy and Brondby are deeply involved in a title race with the 2015 champion FC Midtjylland. Both sides share the same number of points (66) after 28 games, which adds extra tension in that Copenhagen derby. Neither side can afford to drop points but both Brondby and FCM have difficult matches this week – Midtjylland has a visit against third-placed FC Nordsjælland later in Sunday night.
Meanwhile, FC Copenhagen also relies on a positive scenario in the derby, which involves first win over Brondby this season, after losing three derbies in a row (0-1 in each one), while FC Midtjylland must win in Farum. If this happens, the gap between FC Nordsjælland (3rd) and FC Copenhagen (4th) will be back to three points and “The Lions” from Copenhagen need to chase the 3rd position if they want to be sure about their Europa League qualification.

Team News: Brondby IF
Brondby already eliminated FCK from the DBU Pokalen (Danish Cup) and won twice in the Superliga, as two of the three derbies were at “Telia Parken” in Copenhagen. Now The Boys from the Western outskirts are ready to face FCK at home soil again after the win in early-August, coming inspired after a 5-1 win over Horsens last weekend. This was the fourth consecutive win of Brondby, who are unbeaten since end of August, when they’ve lost in Aarhus. That 0-2 defeat by AGF has been followed by 20 wins and 5 draws in 25 competitive domestic encounters, making Brondby a major favourite to lift the trophy.
Alexander Zorniger will probably pick the same starting formation (4-3-1-2) that started against Horsens, with Kamil Wilczek (8 goals in 23 league matches) and Teemu Pukki (15 goals in 28 Superliga matches) both leading the attack.
There is a competition between Finnish defender Paulus Arajuuri and the Icelandic defender Hjörtur Hermannsson about who will start next to Benedikt Röcker in heart of the Brondby defense.
In the meantime, Czech forward Jan Kliment (6 goals in 24 Superliga matches) is ruled out until end of the year, suffering from ruptured knee ligament.
Team News: FC Copenhagen (FC København)
FC Copenhagen’s boss Ståle Solbakken won’t be pleased from the 2-3 loss to FC Midtjylland last round, which has ended a winning run of six games for FCK. The Copenhagen outfit took a 2-0 lead at the “MCH Arena” in Herning, after goals by Federico Santander and Viktor Fischer, but “The Wolves” have managed to make a full comeback to 3-2 in space of 24 minutes. Thus FCK remains six points behind the third position and Ståle Solbakken will have to demand much better concentration by his men in the upcoming short trip to Brondby.
Unlike his colleague in Brondby, Ståle Solbakken won’t be able to rely on a few players – Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen is injured, while midfielder Uros Matic and striker Andrija Pavlovic (7 goals in 20 games) both play for Copenhagen’s Reserves, since they will leave the club in near future. Defender Erik Johansson also gains match practice with the Copenhagen B team, but it might be too early for him to return in an important league game, so the Swede may sit on the bench, where we’ll also find Jan Gregus and Nicolaj Thomsen. The latter may actually start for FCK if Federico Santander, who left the field against FCM injured, fails to recover in time and Solbakken decide to use Viktor Fischer as a secondary striker. This will open a space for Thomsen on the left wing, but this will happen only if Fischer doesn’t start there. Nevertheless, Santander trains with the first-team and FCK’s coach stated that his chances to play in the derby on Sunday are 50/50.
Another possible rotation, if Santander fails to recover and play from the outset, is related with the name of youngster Jonas Wind, who can start as a partner of Pieros Sotiriou on top of Copenhagen’s 4-4-2 formation, which will leave Fischer on the wing. Rasmus Falk should start on the right wing, while captain William Kvist should return in the starting lineup here – as a central midfield partner of Zeca.
Update: Andrija Pavlovic was included in FCK’s group so he might be another attacking option for the away side. Serbian striker needs first-team football and mostly goals if he wants to make it into the Serbia 2018 World Cup squad.
Superliga: Brondby vs FC Copenhagen – Prediction and Betting Tips
The greater pressure is over Brondby and this can be either an advantage and a disadvantage for the home side. They need to seek the win by all means which can eventually open some spaces for “The Lions” from Copenhagen.
It’s true that Brondby have kept a clean sheet in the last three meetings with FC Copenhagen, but they have also conceded a goal in each of their home matches this year, although they’ve won all of them. Furthermore, Brondby conceded a goal in its last 8 home games, winning seven of them. FC Copenhagen, on the other side, have scored in each of their last four away matches, winning three of them.
After three Copenhagen derbies with only one goal scored in each, it’s finally time for a match where both sides will score. Our experts recommend betting on: “Both teams to score – Yes“.
