Bulgarian First League: Dunav Ruse vs Botev Plovdiv 20.10.2017

Some gloomy weeks in first half of the 2017-18 football season were decisive for Veselin Velikov’s future in Dunav Ruse. The one, already former coach, responsible for Dunav’s resurrection in top tier of Bulgarian football as well as for their second ever European performance since more than 40 years, resigned after another disappointing result last weekend. Dunav lost 3:0 to Slavia in Sofia which was their seventh defeat for 12 rounds and thus “Dragons” are finding themselves on the penultimate 13th position, having won 9 points only.
Currently the club from Ruse is without a coach and the training process is led by sports director Ivaylo Petkov, who is an extremely experienced former footballer, but hasn’t any managerial experience. According to Petkov’s own words, this will last until Dunav’s board finds a person with long-term vision for the club.
Situation in the away team is completely different and Botev Plovdiv travels to the Danube river in a marvelous form. “The Canaries” fly to Ruse after a narrow win against Vereya on Monday night, which was their fifth in a row and sixth in the last seven competitive games.
As a result of all these victories Botev Plovdiv progressed in the Bulgarian Cup and climbed to fourth position in the league after a wobbly beginning of the domestic campaign.

Match Preview: Team News, Squads and Missing Players

Considering fact that Dunav Ruse parted ways with its innovator, we don’t expect some general changes so soon after his departure. Especially when the club will be without a coach and maybe not only for the upcoming match. However, Dunav have no injury concerns and Plamen Donev (who will lead the team on the bench) can rely on all players.
Botev Plovdiv’s boss Nikolay Kirov took a 19-men group for this game as the defensive midfielder Yaya Meledje returns in selection. He missed some rounds due to a rule allowing maximum of 4 non-EU players in each team’s group, but absence of Alvaro Juliano opens a spot for the Ivorian. Brazilian midfielder remained in Plovdiv with a virus infection, while veteran Yordan Minev and goal scorer Fernando Viana both travelled with the team, although they remain doubts. Even if they both sit on the bench, Nikolay Kirov has some reliable replacements in face of left-back Lazar Marin and striker Steven Petkov, who scored the winning goal coming as a substitution against Vereya.
