UEFA Europa League History and Facts

The UEFA Cup was launched back in 1971 replacing the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Later on UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup was withdrawn and consolidated with the UEFA Cup back in late 90’s – 1999 to be more exact. Thereafter UEFA Cup became competition which accepts champions of the domestic cup competitions.
Initially it was tournament with knockout stages but in 2004 group stages were introduced, with purpose for making the UEFA Cup more attractive, since it usually remains in shadow of the big brother – The UEFA Champions League.
Competition has been known with its current name since season 2009–10 season, following a change in its format. This makes Ukrainian Shakhtar Donetsk last team that won the UEFA Cup, but however, for UEFA footballing records purposes, both tournaments (UEFA Cup and Europa League) are considered the same competition, as change of the name has been simply a rebranding.
Tottenham Hotspur were the first UEFA Cup winners back in 1972, winning over their countrymen Wolverhampton Wanderers in a two-legged match-up. Last champions were Spanish La Liga representatives Sevilla as they will remain in competition history, since they’re already the most honored team with five trophies, but winning it three times in a row (in 2014, 2015 and 2016) makes Sevilla’s UEFA Europa League history even more remarkable.
Traditionally new season of the UEFA Europa League kick-off with the qualifying round fixtures and this happens in end of June or beginning of July. All best teams from the qualifiers are promoted to the UEFA Europa League groups, where some seeded teams are waiting and group phase draw usually takes place in end of August.
Main rounds of the UEFA Europa League begin in September and until end of the year all group stage rounds are played. Top two sides from each group proceed to the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 (1/16 finals) where they meet eight more new entrants – coming from the UEFA Champions League (all third-placed teams in the groups).
